The start of the school year is a perfect time for setting the tone for the year ahead, and a traditional whiteboard can be a fantastic billboard communicating ideas and goals.
Having students and teachers write their goals for both personal and academic achievement on the whiteboard can be a constant reminder to stay on track. Of course a “meet the teacher” section allows a teacher to write some quirky information about themselves and prompt students to share as well. Students can write their names and some interesting facts, hobbies or school activities that other students might find interesting and prompt them to share as well.
Classroom rules and expectations should be displayed and students can react to them and include their thoughts on the whiteboard gaining ownership. A tracking section where a teacher could keep an update on goals allows students to see how close they are to reaching their marks. Teachers can use the whiteboard to outline the curriculum, schedules and list reminders. A whiteboard can be used to introduce terms or begin a word wall for the year to focus students on new learnings. Traditional whiteboards are canvasses of expression where students can draw, express ideas and can be used as a billboard for the quote-of-the-day and/or question-of-the-day.
Whiteboards can display significant events generating excitement. Magnetic whiteboards can be used to hang papers or other significant communications that students might find interesting and allow for easy handouts. Feedback should always be welcome and a magnetic whiteboard could house a folder or magnetic pocket for ideas, complaints or other important feedback.
