Snowballing — an educational and collaborative teaching technique that when combined with a whiteboard fosters successful idea sharing. Students begin by writing ideas, questions or other information on a piece of paper and in some instances students throw crumbled up papers to the front or center of the room to start discussions.
Another snowballing technique is to pass each paper along to another student each building on the ideas thus snowballing the ideas. Both of these techniques builds inter-connective thoughts, teamwork and allows students to enhance ideas and learn together.
This starter exercise releases pent up energy in students and allows them to focus on subject matter. The technique can enhance productive cooperation and achieve goals.
A whiteboard can act as a focal point for learning by recording evolving ideas gathered by the snowball teaching technique. Teachers can display the ideas and students can come up to the board to build upon ideas furthering the thought process. A traditional whiteboard helps to make the exercise effective as it facilitates spontaneity and kinesthetic learning. Snowballing requires an organizing tool that a traditional whiteboard can solve.
