With the wave of school shootings over the past few years, many schools are upping their security game. Between ballistic backpacks and metal detectors at school entrances, the school security market is growing exponentially. According to an article by Talib Visram, “the education sector of the security market grew to $2.7 billion last year, up from $2.5 billion in 2015. The proportion of schools using video surveillance grew to 70% in 2013, up from 20% in 1999.” What some schools are struggling with is figuring out which security systems are best for their schools, staff, and students.
Finding Safety Solutions
Many schools are scrambling (and rushing purchases) to find safety solutions, rather than taking their time to do research. And while something is better than nothing, districts shouldn’t be too quick to purchase the first ballistic system they find online, experts say. Some gadgets violate state or local codes, making the safety device a problem in itself.
Prior to school shootings becoming more frequent, many schools couldn’t provide the proper funding to equip their schools with higher security. However, after the shooting in Parkland, Florida, in early 2018, and other mass attacks, most districts are finding funds through local and state tax dollars for security training and for purchases of safety products.
